The diagram shows the life cycle of silkworms and the process of making silk cloth.

The life cycle is divided into several particular developing stages. It starts when a moth produces her eggs on the mulberry leaves. After ten days the eggs grow into silkworm larva, whose foods are the mulberry leaf. The second stage ends. In the following four to six weeks, the larva will generate silk threats which cover the larva. This is the third stage. The fourth stage lasts for three or eight days during which cocoon is formed. 16 days after the formation of the cocoon, a moth finally comes out of the cocoon. A new cycle starts.

The production of the silk cloth consists of numerous steps. The first is to select cocoons, which then are heated in boiled water. After the heat treatment, the cocoon is ready to be decomposed into threads ranging from 300 to 900 meters in length. The second is to twist the thread together. To dye is the third. After this process, silk cloth is woven.

Children who are brought up in families which have not great amount of money are better prepared to deal with the problems of adult life than children are brought up by wealthy parents. Do you agree or disagree?

Among the factors that influence a child’s development, family financial background is a critical one. Empirically kids from rich families, after entering adulthood, deal with problems differently from those from less well-off households. Generally the latter is more capable of problem-solving.

Lack of wealth in a family usually helps children to become independent and responsible individuals. Rich kids have more toys. If a toy truck gets broken, parents would buy their children another fancier, more expensive one. Rich kids go the best school in the neighborhood. On the contrary, children from an ordinary family have to take good care of their toys. Their parents are often busy with work. So children have chances to make many of their own decisions. Many kids babysit younger brothers or sisters or even take small part-time jobs to help the family. Such differences in the upbringing often tough them for adult life.

Children from less affluent families learn about competition early in life. For example, they go to a good school only because they have excellent grades, not because daddy donates a building for the school. Hard work and constant trying are the only way to change their life. So they fight to be a winner. But rich kids are so over-protected by their families that they hardly know the harsh world until they leave college and start to work. There are more successful entrepreneurs, actors, doctors, and lawyers from poor families than from rich ones. Poor kids know how to survive in the big wild world better than their rich friends.

But there are cases in which children from rich families have grown up to be very smart, accomplished individuals. Many of them even start businesses independent from their families. But still most of them know more about having fun than about being a good working professional.

To sum up, less privileged family background generally enables children to be more responsible and independent. Poor kids value hard work more, handle competition better than rich kids, and cope with problems better after becoming adults.

Individuals can do nothing to improve the environment; only governments and large companies can make a difference. To what do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, an increasing number of people are concerned about environmental protection and regard it as one of the most important challenges. However, whether only governments and big firms have resources and powers to preserve our environment is a controversial issue. My view is that every single citizen could also make a huge difference.

In the first place, it is clear that it is human activities that have the greatest impact throughout the history. Both environment contamination and conservation are the long-term process, and no single government or big company can meet this challenge alone. So whoever created the problem should be responsible for solving it; environment protection needs every one of us to continuously participate in.

Moreover, the public’s wills and behaviors have critical influence on government’s policies and companies’ strategies. For example, if everyone says “no” to plastic shopping bags and paper cups, the companies that manufacture such products will switch to environmental-friendly substitutes in order to survive in the market.

However, that is not to say that governments and large companies cannot positively contribute. Indeed, governments can enact laws and introduce programs to raise the public’s low-carbon awareness; companies can promote green products to change the public’s consuming habits. But they also need every citizen’s appreciation and support to bring good results.

In sum, no effort is too small when we are protecting the environment. Meanwhile, local authorities and organizations must shoulder their responsibility to develop low-carbon economy at the macro level. Only by doing so can we assure that we could hand this beautiful planet to our next generation and the next generation after.

Research indicates that the characteristics we are born with have much more influence on our personality and development than any experiences we may have in our life. Which do you consider to be the major influence?

Today the way we consider human psychology and mental development is heavily influenced by the genetic sciences. We now understand the importance of inherited characteristics more than ever before. Yet we are still unable to decide whether an individual’s personality and development are more influenced by genetic factors(nature) or by the environment (nurture).

Research, relating to identical twins, has highlighted how significant inherited characteristics can be for an individual’s life. But whether these characteristics are able to develop within the personality of an individual surely depends on whether the circumstances allow such a development. It seems that the experiences we have in life are so unpredictable and so powerful, that they can boost or over-ride other influences, and there seems to be plenty of research findings to confirm this.

My own view is that there is no one major influence in a person’s life. Instead, the traits we inherit from our parents and the situations and experiences that we encounter in life are constantly interacting. It is the interaction of the two that shapes a person’s personality and dictates how that personality develops. If this were not true, then we would be able to predict the behavior and character of a person from the moment they were born.

In conclusion, I do not think that either nature or nurture is the major influence on a person, but that both nave powerful effects. How these factors interact is still unknown today and they remain largely unpredictable in a person’s life.

Introduce the mentioned opinion and give your own recent years, animal protection has become an issue of concern. People take different attitudes toward the increasing attention and expenditure on wildlife

conservation. Some People suggest that the spending should be redirected to helping other fields in our society. I agree with the view that the investment in wildlife protection is not worthwhile.

Give specific Reason and details for the opinion mentioned in the question.

Animals, as a key component of the whole food chain, have a profound impact on the sustainability of an ecosystem. As we know, every kind of animals plays an important role in natural example, the demise of any species will lead to the species will lead to the growth or decline of other some extreme cases, some species may be at the verge of extinction such as Dodo bird. If people did not take actions to protect wildlife as soon as possible, we humans will be affected in the end.

Give specific Reason and details for the opinion of yourself.

However, there are more issues that we need to focus in our society rather than protecting current social context, the primacy task is still to improve living standards since there are many people living under the poverty when people are in a good living condition can they pay attention to other social technology and education are another two aspects for governments to concern, These two industries accelerate the development of society, which will provide a better protection for wildlife in turn.

In conclusion, although the animal is a significant part of ecosystem, it’s better for governments to invest more finance and resources in other social problems.

The diagrams of the coastal area of Brightsea illustrate its development from a fishing community in 1950 to a ferry terminal, with plans for future development.

In 1950 the coastal zone of Brightsea was undeveloped with just a light house and lighthouse keepers house. There was a jetty for fishing boats, and a few cottages.

Currently, it can be seen that certain developments have taken place. For example, roads have been constructed and there is an hotel near the lighthouse. A large wharf is now supporting a ferry service. A cafe and shop are catering for the daily needs of the community.

There are plans for Brightsea to experience further growth. The hotel is to be extended and a sailing club built alongside the hotel, to the south. A second ferry wharf will be added with a telecommunications antenna and the shop replaced by a supermarket and car park. In the northern part of Brightsea, a restaurant and apartments will be built to supersede the cafe.

In summary, the coast of Brightsea has changed from being a fishing community in 1950 and is expected to become a more signigicant ferry terminal. The lighthouse will have been the only constant landmark.

Some people believe that students who want to go to university after graduation from high school should have about one years time to get a job to obtain work experience or have a travel to enlarge their vision.

Do you agree or disagree? What is your opinion?

High school students who intend to study at university should attend tertiary education after graduation. To spend one years time doing a job to acquire work experience or to travel for broadening ones vision is, to my mind, a waste of time and energy.

First, university education is the continuation of high school education for those students who want to pursue their learning at an advanced level. A break of one year from academic study will probably weaken ones memory of what has been learned, especially for those who will study such theoretical subjects as mathematics, physics or chemistry.

Besides, many nations have established one examination that all students must pass to qualify for admission to a university. For example, in China there is a college entrance examination. Anyone who fails in the examination will be denied of admission into a university.

Furthermore, one years work or travel does not help students much in their academic studies at university because it is unpredictable for ones work experience to be integrated into ones studies of specific subjects, to say nothing of traveling experience. Even if some subjects, such as MBA, require students to have work experience, one years work experience, however, is not sufficient to meet the requirements of three or five years, and ones work experience should, after all, be related to management.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Some people believe that the spread of TV has made families less closer. To what degree do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

You should write at least 250 words. You should use your own ideas of knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

As one of the most important inventions of the past century, TV is playing a more and more important role in modern life. However, some people are starting to worry about its negative effects on traditional families. I am convinced that the existence of TV has brought about alienation among family members.

First, watching TV occupies our time to municate with our families. TV provides a ready means of relaxation for people who spend their days doing routine and busy jobs. As soon as TV enters into our home, most of our free time is controlled by it. What is more, the one-eyed monster requires absolute silence and attention. If any member dares to open his mouth, the others order him to shut up immediately. Therefore we municate less with our family members.

Furthermore, families often quarrel over what programs they should watch. Thanks to hardworking TV workers, we enjoy more TV channels and more colorful TV programs. But a question has arisen: it is difficult for families to choose a mon channel because they have different interests. It is inevitable to given rise to quarrel among them.

In addition, poor-quality TV programs can have severe effects on people’s mood and behavior. For instance, a person who watches too many idealized programs may bee unrealistic. In addition, unhealthy programs which contain obscene and violent contents may cause people’s curiosity.

In conclusion, I think that TV indeed has led to alienation among family members. We should be aware about the problem. Something should be done as soon as possible to protect the families from the negative effects of television. For example, we should reduce the time spent in front of the little screen and spend more time with our families together. (290 words)

With the development of cities, more and more new buildings are appearing in the city. Some people claim that the government should ensure all the new buildings should be built in traditional styles. For me, I do not agree with this suggestion.

Undoubtedly, the old buildings can reflect our traditional culture and should be protected and built. They are the houses where the ancient people lived. By appreciating these old buildings, we can have a better understanding of our ancient culture and history.

However, I do not agree that all the new buildings should be built in traditional styles. First of all, a city’s culture identity consists of the past culture and the modern culture. While past culture can be represented by the traditional buildings, modern culture should be reflected by modern buildings. If all the new buildings are built in traditional styles, the modern culture may be lost in the city. Secondly, the style of the new building should be decided by a lot of factors such as location, function, and so on. For instance, it is impossible for us to build a modern shopping mall into traditional style, because there are a lot of famous brands inside. Thirdly, modern buildings can accommodate more people than traditional buildings, which can meet the increasing population.

Therefore, I agree that we should build some old buildings, but we should not build all the buildings into traditional styles. We should consider a lot of aspects before we make the final decision.

Nowadays the media often cover news of crimes such as murder, rape and armed robbery in great details. While such information may warn the public of the potential danger and help reduce crimes, providing too much information about crimes might lead to certain negative side effects. In my opinion, the information about crimes should be made accessible to the public but the media should refrain from reporting crimes in an irresponsible manner.

To begin with, there is no doubt that people should have the right to information about crimes committed in a community. If someone in the neighborhood were murdered, the chance of other people being killed would also increase. The people should be notified of the event as well as any actions the authorities had taken immediately. Any attempts to block the news about the crimes would violate peoples right to know the truth. Yet, the necessity of informing the public does not mean full details have to be disclosed.

Admittedly, the best way to alert the public about a recent crime being committed is through the reporting by the media. Most of us read newspaper and watch TV news everyday. But there are a number of reasons why the media should only report the crimes briefly and let any interested parties follow up with the events by themselves. To begin with, the details of the crimes may cause discomfort and even panic among the members of the public. This is particularly true for the young children in the society. In addition, the time on TV and the space on the newspaper are scarce resources that can be utilized in many different ways. Therefore, the detailed reporting of the crimes would incur high opportunity costs as the public attention would have been directed to other important issues such as education and environment. Finally, the full information about crimes may be made available through the police or other government agencies so that anyone interested in the events may consult the records. Such arrangement would be less costly compared to reporting the details via the media.

In conclusion, since crimes are relevant to each and every member of the society, the media should report the events as soon as possible to alert the public and to help prevent more crimes. Nevertheless, the reports of crimes should be relatively brief in order to avoid public panic and to save the precious TV time and newspaper space. Furthermore, anyone who wants to know more about certain events should be allowed to consult the government agencies for such

In some parts of the world there is an increasing number of people trying to find out the history of their families. Why? Is this trend a positive or negative development?

            Example writing:

What you can discover about the roots of your family is not likely to make headlines, but may be crucial in building a family tree that can be both interesting and surprising. Trying to search a family history is a positive attitude toward something that you learn from and grow from it. Good or bad, one thing is sure: you cannot erase the past.

Some people are actually not interested to know their family roots. The thought of finding out how they end up where they are at the moment simply does not intrigue them enough. They think it is useless to get whatever information leading to who were they related to--great, great grand-parents, and great, great grand uncles and aunties. Hence, it seems that embarking on a project to create a family tree is not unlike digging the graves of the once-upon-a-time family members. Besides, they are convinced that there is nothing exciting or worthwhile about any serious research on family histories. This point of view is somehow understandable, considering the effort might turn out to be futile going through much trouble in vain to gather details about folks in ancient blood line long since buried and gone.

The main factors responsible for the decreased productivity of agricultural land in North America, Europe, and Oceania during the 1990s were summarized in a pie chart and a table.

The most serious problem was over-grazing. It has caused the world to lose 35% of agriculture land. This problem is followed closely by deforestation and over-cultivation.

The area that has lost most proportion of its agriculture land was Europe at 23% However, Oceania and North America was not as badly affected, losing 13% and 5% of its farmland respectively.

Surprisingly, the main problem faced by each area is different from one another. The problem with over-grazing is especially serious in Oceania, resulting in 11.3% of its land unsuitable for agriculture. On the other hand, deforestation that caused 9.8% of agriculture land unusable was the major problem faced by the European farmers. Although over-cultivation was the primary threat in North America, it was not a problem at all in Oceania.

In conclusion, over-grazing was the main cause of worldwide degradation in 1990s. Europe’s percentage of degradation was largest of all three regions and all three regions had different predominant causes.

The charts below compare the age structure of the populations of France and India in 1984.

The two charts compare the populations of France and India in terms of age distribution by gender in the year 1984.

It is clear that the population of India was younger than that of France in 1984, with a noticeably larger proportion of people aged under 20. France, on the other hand, had a significantly larger percentage of elderly inhabitants.

In India, close to 14% of people were aged 5 or under, and each five-year age bracket above this contained an increasingly smaller proportion of the population. France’s population, by contrast, was more evenly distributed across the age ranges, with similar figures (around 7% to 8% of all people) for each five-year cohort between the ages of 0 and 40. Somewhere between 10% and 15% of all French people were aged 70 or older, but the equivalent figure for India was only 2%.

Looking more closely at gender, there was a noticeably higher proportion of French women than men in every cohort from age 50 upwards. For example, almost 3% of French 70- to 75-year-olds were women, while just under 2% were men. No significant gender differences can be seen on the Indian population chart.

It is obvious that advanced technologies such as cellular phones or the net not only bring a lot of fun to youngsters who are always passionate to novel things, but also have an important effect on the life of senior citizens who would like to keep the pace of the age.

Today, mobile phones are increasingly popular with old people. Unlike young people who fancy playing games or taking photos with phones, they seem to be most interested in their most basic function communication. It is easily found that keeping in touch by mobiles with their children who live independently or study overseas has become a necessary thing in their routines. Plus, if some of old people feel physically uncomfortable or get in danger outdoors and alone, they immediately make an emergency call or inform . their relatives or friends using mobile phones.

The Internet is equally important with mobile phone in old peoples life now. Apparently, some elderly tend to surf on Internet, studying something that they are fascinated with such as calligraphy , painting and so forth; some like to meet new people online or chat with their friends by tools available on Internet such as MSN or OICQ; others become accustomed to shopping online or running their own small businesses by E-bay.

The aging population is going to become a major concern particularly in more developed countries, but this should not be viewed as something threatening to society. It is a blessing for any individual to live a long and healthy life, only that it could indicate that the responsibilities of caring for the elderly in the future may partly fall on the younger generation. The questions refer especially to how the younger generation could provide answers that are able to move society forward, taking into account a number of social and economic effects on the nation as a whole.

As the proportion of older people is steadily increasing, there are doubts over changes regarding the structure of a modern society. A possible change may the distribution of years of expected lifespan on the social scale, now that the family planning program is in fashion. Then, what will this dramatic shift mean for social services, such as health caring and pension on retirement? Overall effects, however, are not clear enough; for instance, how older peoples prolonged lives are to be arranged in the social context? At this point, it is interesting to know how todays younger generation would re-think their roles in society if they might live 100 or more and be in good shape? And should working people in society continue to be retired as usual at 60 and 65 ?

The charts compare Korea, Sweden and the UK in terms of the methods used in each country to dispose of harmful waste.

It is clear that in both the UK and Sweden, the majority of dangerous waste products are buried underground. By contrast, most hazardous materials in the Republic of Korea are recycled.

Looking at the information in more detail, we can see that 82% of the UK’s dangerous waste is put into landfill sites. This disposal technique is used for 55% of the harmful waste in Sweden and only 22% of similar waste in Korea. The latter country recycles 69% of hazardous materials, which is far more than the other two nations.

While 25% of Swedens dangerous waste is recycled, the UK does not recycle at all. Instead, it dumps waste at sea or treats it chemically. These two methods are not employed in Korea or Sweden, which favour incineration for 9% and 20% of dangerous waste respectively.

Government-funded housing for low-income groups is a debated topic. Some experts claim that it falls within the scope of the welfare state. However, I disagree with this approach for several reasons.

Firstly, governments have limited resources, and providing free housing for all who cannot afford it is not sustainable. Other pressing issues, such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, need to be addressed. Instead of providing free housing, authorities should focus on creating more job opportunities and increasing the minimum wage, enabling people to purchase their own homes.

Furthermore, waiving accommodation fees can reduce occupants motivation and increase laziness. With no rent to pay, there is no incentive to work hard and improve their economic situation. This can lead to a decline in productivity and economic growth. In addition, it may also result in an increase in demand for public services, such as healthcare and education, which in turn puts a strain on the governments resources.

In addition, this policy can create a sense of entitlement that may lead to a negative impact on the community. With free housing, people may start to believe that they have a right to it and become dependent on their city council for support. This dependency can lead to reduced motivation to work and contribute to the community, further increasing the number of people relying on government support.

In conclusion, while housing is a basic need, I believe that it should not be provided for free to everyone who cannot afford it. Instead, the government should focus on creating more job opportunities and increasing the minimum wage to enable lower-income groups to purchase their own homes.

The line graph compares the percentage of people aged 65 or more in three countries over a period of 100 years.

It is clear that the proportion of elderly people increases in each country between 1940 and 2040. Japan is expected to see the most dramatic changes in its elderly population.

In 1940, around 9% of Americans were aged 65 or over, compared to about 7% of Swedish people and 5% of Japanese people. The proportions of elderly people in the USA and Sweden rose gradually over the next 50 years, reaching just under 15% in 1990. By contrast, the figures for Japan remained below 5% until the early 2000s.

Looking into the future, a sudden increase in the percentage of elderly people is predicted for Japan, with a jump of over 15% in just 10 years from 2030 to 2040. By 2040, it is thought that around 27% of the Japanese population will be 65 years old or more, while the figures for Sweden and the USA will be slightly lower, at about 25% and 23% respectively.

The chart below shows the figures for imprisonment in five countries between 1930 and 1980.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below.

The chart compares the figures for criminal imprisonment in five countries over a span of 50 years from 1930 to 1980.

As can be seen from the chart, the figures for the United States, Canada and New Zealand stood out as being really significant and all the designated countries revealed rather dramatic changes in the imprisonment figures across the board over the 50 years.

Firstly, the imprisonment figures of UK were on a steady rise. We see that in 1930, there were 30,000 cases, but in 1980, it became 85,000 cases. The period during 1940-1970 saw the fastest increase.

Second, the situation of Australia was quite similar to that of New Zealand, but not as dramatic. Here we see that in 1930, the cases for Australia was 70,000 while New Zealand had a very high number of 100,000 cases. Then in 1940, the figures for the two countries both dropped substantially, with New Zealand dropping by almost 45,000 cases. In 1950, New Zealand went on with its trend of slight decrease while Australia showed a minor increase. Later, in 1960, both countries experienced great rises and reached 70,000 cases and 78,000 cases respectively. The year 1970 saw an interesting scene: the figures for UK, Australia and New Zealand drew even at 79,000 cases. Then in 1980, we see that Australia dropped substantially while New Zealand continued its upward trend.

Third, . and Canada both had very big starting figures in 1930, 100,000 cases and 120,000 cases respectively. In 1940, . rose rapidly to 130,000 cases while Canada decreased by 10,000 cases. In 1950, things changed dramatically, with US dropping by about 20,000 cases while Canada rising to 115,000 cases. In 1960, . rose while Canada fell and the figures for both countries were 118,000 cases and 102,000 cases respectively. The two countries both saw substantial decreases in 1970, with US falling to 95,000 cases and Canada dropping to 83,000 cases. 1980 witnessed an astounding increase margin with US and the figure rose with great momentum to 138,000 cases and Canada climbed up to 90,000 cases.

Thus we see that imprisonment in the five countries underwent many changes across the 50 years.

The discussion about how watching television programmes could impact on children has heated up recently. Some people are against this activity, whereas others are for it. As far as I am concerned, the advantages of watching TV undoubtedly outweigh its disadvantages.

There are two reasons why some people claim it is detrimental for children to watch television every day. First, it is widely acknowledged that too much screentime does harm to children’s eyesight. Scientific studies suggest that children should not be glued to television. Additionally, children’s psychological health might be impaired due to exposure to unsuitable contents. For example, violence and drug abuse are often shown in some films. Children who lack discipline or close supervision easily become addicted to the virtual world and might adopt an impractical outlook upon life, which has an adverse influence on their well-being.

However, watching television in face can be informative and educational for children. To begin with, watching news is an efficient way to know what is happening around the world. Saying no to television is a veto on getting informed. Also, TV shows like National Geographic and Animal World satisfy their curiosity and develop their creativity. Therefore, what matters most is being selective about what to watch and how. Last but not least, it can be quality time for both parents and children instead of a waste of time.

In conclusion, although there might be some health risks for younger generation to watch television for too long and too often, I still believe that it is a blessing rather than a curse; cartoons, films and a large number of programmes do enrich their life in many ways.

The allocation of budget from the local authorities has been a public concern. Some suppose that the financial assistance from the government should be used to support artists, while others claim that it is a waste of money. From my perspective, the former idea is more reasonable.

Admittedly, the governmental funding on artists is widely perceived as a waste since the subsidies can hardly bring tangible benefits to the public. Compared with other fundamental priorities, such as education and medical care, the government financially supporting artists is not likely to essentially address livelihood issues. Considering the limited state budget, offering financial aid to painters, musicians and poets, without putting sufficient investments on other vital areas, may inevitably arouse public dissatisfaction.

However, from my point of view, the financial assistance provided for all kinds of artists is justified. For one thing, the government is supposed to shoulder the responsibility to satisfy public mental pursuit. With the improvement of people’s living standards, what the public actually pursue is not only material satisfaction but also enriched spiritual life, which means the local authorities should allocate subsidies to artists to ensure the production of fine arts. Once the financial burden on artists can be alleviated, more creative paintings, music and poems can be delivered rather than those profit-driven ones, and the audiences can accordingly gain spiritual pleasure. For another, the government should also spend money on promoting the development of culture industry and gaining recognition around the world. Due to the fact that different artistic expressions comprise the local cultural heritage, the funded artists can collectively contribute to maintaining the richness of art industry through dedicating to artworks and therefore local culture industry will boom and flourish.

Given the arguments above, although the government does need to balance between different aspects, I suppose artists deserve to be supported financially by the local authorities considering the positive impacts on the individuals and the whole society.

The statement that teachers outnumber other resources such as internet or television programs in terms of how much student can learn on campus is too presumptuous.

How much student can learn depends not only on the resources of knowledge or information but also on students themselves and the environment in which they learn. In some leading universities or schools, the academic staffs are usually outstanding leaders in their subjects, and the campus is well equipped with various facilities to help live and learn. In this case, it is often true that students in general are able to learn more from teachers than from other resources. This also explains why so many bright young people pay high tuitions to graduate or professional programs.

Certainly, not all teachers are qualified. In some hinterland or remote areas, educational staffs and facilities are rather scarce. Teachers are usually those who themselves are less well educated. In this case, to learn from these teachers is less effective or even negative. This accounts for why so many parents spend all of their money in renting a small room in the slums or ghettoes in Beijing, China close to universities to help children learn more and better.

These, however, should not be the absolute conclusion. The fact is that some students can learn well from both resources, while others fail in either.

In conclusion, I do not agree the argument that at schools students can learn much more from teachers than other resources. In fact, it depends.

Every year, millions of animals undergo painful suffering or death as a result of scientific research into the effects of drugs, food additives, cosmetics and other chemical products. While most people think animal testing is necessary, others are upset by what they see as needless suffering. This essay looks at some of the positive and negative aspects of animal testing.

Many medical treatments and procedures have been developed from experiments on animals. Since animals share many features with humans, scientists use animals to test the safety and effectiveness of newly developed drugs before pilot testing on small groups of patients. Medical teams practice new operating techniques such as transplants on animals. Without animal testing, many procedures or new drugs would be extremely unsafe.

However, many people are concerned that animals are suffering unnecessarily and cruelly. They do not believe that every new drug needs to be tested on animals, especially with the huge database of knowledge and modern computer models. They also are worried that many animal tests are ineffective, pointing out that any drugs have had to be withdrawn from the market despite extensive testing. They particularly feel that animal testing should not be used for non-essential products such as cosmetics, shampoos, soaps, and cleaning products. Furthermore, some campaigners would like to see certain tests replaced and more humane methods used.

It has been increasingly common for parents to require their children to excel at school and in other competitive environments, often at the price of sacrificing most other interests. This result-oriented approach is, according to those in favour of it, a necessary evil to give young learners a competitive edge before they reach adulthood, preventing them from missing precious opportunities or progressing too slowly. Is this claim justified?

There are two main reasons for adopting a strict tiger parenting style. The one that attracts the most publicity is scarcity-induced fear. The fact that academic excellence is the main admission factor for top schools and colleges means that when parents arrange their childrens schedule, they tend to prioritize resume-worthy activities and expect them to produce results that justify the time and money invested. Another reason is the perception that performance equals competence. Rather than encouraging their children to explore and find their passion, many are more concerned with their exams and contest results and so leave their learning needs and potential unattended.

The natural consequences of paying too much attention to results can be serious. A major problem is the long-term effect on skill development. Being trained to achieve good grades and win competitions does not mean that children have developed independent thinking and communication skills, essential assets of functioning members of society. Also, the parents high regard for excellence can create a sense of alienation and lower self-esteem. Given high levels of academic pressure, young learners may face harsh criticism which creates self-doubt about their abilities and intelligence, resulting in an impression that they are unworthy of their parents attention.

In general, although competition is fierce for the best education and career, demanding ones children to be nothing but the best at school and elsewhere is not the wisest approach. Alternatively, attention should be paid to what they need for their long-term growth and happiness.

It is a common sense that students from rural communities have less access to higher education. Under such cases, some suggest that the problem should be solved by guaranteeing more chances for disadvantaged students through lowering standards for enrolling them into universities. From my perspective, I am not in favour of the above statement.

To start with, it is unfair for their counterparts who are from urban areas or wealthy background since they have to take the same college entrance examinations or interviews under the same assessment rubric. Consequently, the results turn out to be unreliable and will wind up being meaningless. The privilege is likely to result in the over‐ eliance on their impoverished barckground.

Worse yet, if university education opportunities are easily offered to poor students, they tend to take it for granted. In fact, as many poor students usually endeavour to exert their academic capacities for university scholarship and bursary, their academic performances will be affected when their goals are easily achieved, which could limit their academic achievement.

People living in big cities face problems; government should encourage people to move to small towns. What are these problems? Do you agree government should encourage people to move to small towns?生活在大城市的人面臨許多問題,政府應(yīng)該鼓勵人們搬到小城鎮(zhèn)。請問這些問題是什么?你認(rèn)為政府應(yīng)該鼓勵人們搬去小城鎮(zhèn)嗎?

People who want a modern life style, with a focus on luxury, convenience and accessibility, will choose city life. Advanced technological appliances to better job opportunities, better wages and extensive product ranges are some of the attractions of city life. But nowadays people living in big cities face a variety of issues. Some citizens advocate that government should encourage people to move to small towns as population density in cities increases, it leads to overcrowding.

In 2007 the United Nations estimated the total world population at 6.6 billion were living in urban areas. Roughly 80 percent of the U.S. population, for example, lives in urban areas. This happens because the demand for housing is more than the supply of housing.

Moreover, increased movement of people from rural to urban areas puts a strain on the citys infrastracfture. As more people join the commuter rush each day, roads and freeways become crowded. New construction adds to the chaos as it struggles to keep up with demand. Ambulances and emergency vehicles sometimes find it hard to navigate the bumper-to-bumper traffic during rush hours. This can put seriously ill or injured peoples lives at risk.

However, from the point of my view, cities have many benefits over villages for them. As a matter of fact, children growing up in small towns do not have as much access to education as children in cities. Whats more, villages may not have enough children to create a school that goes all the way through high school. Cities on the other hand have multiple forms of education such as colleges and universities. Libraries and museums are available in cities. Meanwhile, entertainment is readily accessible in cities in the form of movie theaters, amusement parks and restaurants. More importantly, living in the city provides people with thousands of career choices.

Encouraging people to move to small towns is totally an unwise suggestion. Governments can further encourage the trend by funding education projects and ways to inform the populace about the co

sts of raising more than a set number of children. By using the carrot instead of the stick, people will be more inclined to choose to have smaller families.

Modern people are living a disposable lifestyle in which the discarding of products that have not been used for a longer period of time is the norm. This essay will discuss why this is happening and what issues will be caused. There are two factors responsible for this trend. One of them is the rapid advancement of technology. Since the first Industrial Revolution, technology has been developing at an alarming rate, leading to the fact that products are becoming cheaper to manufacture and purchase, which makes it highly possible for consumers not to value what they possess compared with people decades ago. Another reason is that people are living in a consumer society which encourages purchases. In order to have a high selling volume to generate high profits, consumer psychology is used by merchants to design a range of tempting advertisements .Therefore, surrounded by such attractive information, people cannot help but to dump old products and buy new ones. This human behaviour, however, is likely to exert negative influences. For one thing, the environment is detrimentally impacted. With an increasing number of products thrown away, different parts need to be dealt with, but whatever method is employed, pollution is still caused. For example, landfill will take up massive areas of land, and some substances will not degrade for centuries. Also, incineration generates carbon dioxide, which damages the air quality. For another, keeping on throwing away old products and buying new items means that a great amount of money has to be spent. If this continues and people are unable to make enough money, they will find their life unaffordable. Some people make use of creditcards, but end up living in debts. In conclusion, the formation of a throw-away society is attributed to a jump in technological development and the appearance of a consumer society. Such a society, however, maylead to environmental degradation and a big financial burden on people’s daily life.

Nowadays, it is common that ex-offenders violate the law repeatedly although they have been punished. In this essay, I will initially discuss the reasons for this situation, followed by my suggestions which can assist in preventing crimes from happening.

There are primarily two factors largely responsible for recidivism. To commence with, the sanctions against criminals are not harsh enough. In other words, being punished does not make a huge difference to offenders, leading to the possibility that these people are normally unable to realise the detrimental consequences that breaching the law will entail for victims and society, and such behaviour is likely to be re-exhibited as a result. Additionally, former convicts are not completely accepted in society. People released from prison seem to be automatically judged as those whose character is poor. Their family and friends may not embrace them and employers refuse to recruit them. Therefore, nothing can help them to survive but to re-offend.

To cease crimes, several approaches can be adopted. Firstly, the implementation of more punitive measures is effective. Only when people are truly conscious of their wrongdoing both physically and psychologically can they stop themselves from committing crimes. For instance, a longer stint of community service or jail sentence is respectively appropriate for convicts with minor crimes and serious ones. Secondly, providing more vocational training sessions and job opportunities for those with criminal records is another feasible solution. If they can earn a living independently, having sufficient money to afford accommodation and feed themselves, they are rarely motivated to participate in some illegal activities again.

In conclusion, lenient punishments for law breakers and less social tolerance for previous criminals are the two major two causes of re-offending. However, if severer penalties can be meted out to prisoners and meanwhile ex-criminals are allowed to have a smoother re-entry into the community, crime issues can be tackled.

The fast increase in the number of cars havebrought along many related problems which are wellworth our greatest attention.

First of all, urban traffic is getting from bad to worse. I’d like to cite my own experience asan example. Five years ago, it took me about 30 minutes to drive from home to office. Oneyear later, I needed to spend about 40 minutes on the way. Then two years later, I had tostart out from home at least 1 hour earlier in order to get to my office on good time for work. And then, since last year, it has just been too normal for me to spend about one and half hoursto make it. The traffic just moves like a worm!

Second, with the ever growing number of cars, air quality in urban areas is deterioratingwith each passing day. We used to see clear blue sky and breathe fresh air, but now this wouldbe a real luxury. Car exhaust has seriously polluted the air and people’s health is greatlyendangered. It seems certain that we human beings have already made a fatal mistake thatcould only be remedied by bringing down the number of cars hugely.

Sure, we can not deny the fact that cars have brought us speed, comfort and greatermobility. However, these have already been history. We are suffering much more from carsthan benefiting from them. Our health conditions are going down rapidly both due to thepolluted air that we have to breathe every second and our lack of exercise as a result of theever increasing amount of time we have to spend behind the wheel!

What can we do? From the foregoing discussion, I’m sure we have already found asolution: to discourage people to use cars! I know very well that science and technology arealso developing very fast and there might be better solutions coming up in the future, but, before that, let’s first salvage ourselves in such a passive way!

Many museums have been faced with financial problems over the past years of recession and lagging economic recovery. As it is increasingly expensive to maintain museums, sufficient money must be raised from both government sources and private (either businesses or individuals) donations, in order to keep them open to public.

Investment from governments must form a bigger proportion of the income of many museums at different levels. As a major way to fund museums, the public sector should always do more, and there may be no substitutes for the government support for museums, especially in the long-lasting financial crisis when that government support is more urgently needed. Although, in the face of such adversity, museums have shown great resilience and creativity in generating new sources of revenue, those troubled institutions can only be sustained with stronger government backing. Considering that museums preserve a country’s collective memory for future generations, the importance of public funding in museums could never be overestimated.

Private donations also occupy an important part in keeping a museum, especially when government funding is limited. This way of funding can be done by providing money for new programs and spaces, as well as giving works of art as gifts to the museum’s collections. The museums may in turn tailor themselves to the needs of the donors by affording certain privileges to them, including the right to use the museum’s space to hold some special events such as promotion campaigns. This has given rise to complaints and worries in the general public that receiving individual donations may leave the museums ruined.

In my view, among all the funding possibilities, government funding should always remain the best way of operating a museum, because it can ensure the maximum independence of the museum as an institution to educate the public. Donations from the private sector are necessary only when the museum cannot obtain sufficient support from the government and are acceptable only on the condition that they do not interfere with the public roles of the museum.
